ResumoThis work leads to determination of the ideal tank depth for the estimation of the inorganic particulate matter spectral reflectance. The determination of tank depth is an important point to obtain the better experiment configuration and aims to reduce the costs od tank construction, to optimize the laboratorial work and to get reliable data without influence of the deep of tank. In the experiment a 110 x 90 x 67 com tank wasused, recovered with a black paint, presenting a zero near spectral reflectance in the visible region. The illumination sourcee was allocated in a 45 zenital angle, consisting of a 1000 W tungsten filament lamp. In the measurements was used the SPECTON SE-590 spectroradiometer, with a 400 nm to900 spectral range allocated at a 0 zenital angle over the water surface, in a 50 cm distance. Two types od silt (red and fgrey), in various concentration were used. to obtain the different responses od the different depths, a 100 x 85 x 7 cm plate, recovered with the same tank revestiment was . The plate was submerged on the tank and sequential measurements were modifying the plate-water surface distance. For each plate-water surface distance a radiometric measurement was performed. the ideal deph is related to the material comcentrations. In the red silt case, with concentrations grater than 5 mg/1, the 50 cm depth presented was adequate. To concentrationa grater than 5mg/1 depths less than 50 cm appears to be adequate. In the grey silt case the same behavior occurred but instead of 5 mg/1, the concentration limit it was 10 mg/1. Discussions about these results and comments on the influence of the wavelength were performed. The ideal dephs were suggested for other material types and acquisition conditions.
